*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Argus Sweetheart Brooch, Enamel and Gilt*
A scarce and attractive HMS Argus sweetheart brooch – a personal keepsake from the Royal Navy’s pioneering carrier. The brooch is enamelled in turquoise blue with gilt detailing, featuring the ship’s crest of a golden bird with spread wings, beneath a naval crown and the name Argus. Measuring 2.8cm x 3cm, the piece is fitted with a simple period pin to the reverse.
Historical Note: HMS Argus holds an important place in naval history as the world’s first example of a true aircraft carrier, commissioned in 1918. She remained in service through the interwar years and played a crucial role in WWII, particularly in ferrying aircraft to Gibraltar, Malta, and North Africa.
Sweetheart brooches such as this were privately purchased and gifted by serving sailors to wives, mothers, and loved ones on the home front, worn proudly as symbols of service and devotion. Brooches bearing her crest would have been worn during this period of intense operations, symbolising a connection to both the ship and her men.
*Condition* The brooch shows honest age-related wear to the gilt finish, with minor losses to the enamel at the edges. The reverse pin remains intact with light patina. Overall, a well-preserved example with strong colour and detail. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
