*British, WWII, RAF Sweetheart Brooch, Mother-of-Pearl & Enamel*

A heartfelt WWII RAF sweetheart brooch in mother-of-pearl and enamel – a touching keepsake of wartime love and loyalty.

A charming original WWII Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, hand-crafted on a mother-of-pearl backing with a gilt and enamel RAF crest. The crowned eagle and laurel design is picked out in gilt metal, highlighted with red enamel to the crown and wreath, blue enamel to the RAF lettering and green enamel to the laurel leaves. Measuring 3.6cm wide by 3.1cm high, the reverse shows a simple period pin fastening.

Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased keepsakes, often given by airmen to their wives, fiancées, or family as tokens of affection and pride in service. This example reflects the highly personal nature of wartime jewellery, combining service identity with decorative elements.

Historical Note:
The RAF sweetheart brooch tradition began during the First World War with the newly-formed Royal Flying Corps and grew in popularity through the interwar years. During WWII, a wide range of designs appeared, often produced by small workshops or jewellers in Britain and overseas. Mother-of-pearl examples such as this were popular as they provided a luminous background and allowed for colourful enamel highlights, making them both affordable and decorative.

Condition Report:
The brooch shows wear consistent with age, with some enamel loss to the laurel leaves, and verdigris evident on the reverse pin fitting. The mother-of-pearl retains an attractive iridescence despite some surface wear and natural age patina. The pin clasp is intact but stiff with oxidation. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
