*British, WWII, RAF Sweetheart Brooch, Enamelled Gilt Brass*

WWII RAF enamelled gilt sweetheart brooch, a petite (4.1cm), classic wartime keepsake given to loved ones at home.

A charming WWII Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, cast in gilt brass and decorated with coloured enamel. The design takes the form of outstretched pilot’s wings with a central blue enamelled disc bearing the letters “RAF” beneath a red enamel crown. Measuring 4.1cm wide by 1.2cm high, the brooch is fitted with its original pin and catch fastening to the reverse.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were popular keepsakes during both World Wars, purchased by serving personnel and presented to wives, fiancées, or mothers as tokens of affection and pride. This example, echoing the RAF pilot’s brevet wings, dates to the 1939–45 period, when such items were commonly produced in enamelled brass or silver. They served as a visible sign of family connection to a serving airman and were widely worn on civilian clothing throughout the war years.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original enamel, though with some small areas of loss to the white and blue sections consistent with age and wear. The gilt finish has toned with natural patina, particularly to the reverse. The pin and catch remain intact and functional. Overall, a good and original example of a wartime RAF sweetheart brooch. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
