*British, WWI, Royal Flying Corps (RFC), Sweetheart Brooch, Gilt & Enamel with King’s Crown*
A fine and original First World War period Royal Flying Corps (RFC) sweetheart brooch, beautifully detailed with a gilt laurel wreath surmounted by the King’s Crown, the central "RFC" monogram picked out in translucent blue enamel. The brooch retains much of its original gilding with traces of red enamel to the crown. Reverse fitted with a simple pin and hook fastening.
Historical Note: Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased items, often given by servicemen to wives, mothers, or sweethearts as tokens of affection and pride in service. This example dates from before 1 April 1918, when the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service merged to form the Royal Air Force. The use of the King’s Crown confirms it as a wartime issue, carried at a time when the fledgling air arm was rapidly expanding and forging its reputation over the battlefields of the Western Front.
*Condition* The brooch remains in good overall condition for its age, with the gilt finish showing honest wear and light oxidation to the reverse. The enamel work is largely intact, though with some minor surface wear. The fastening pin and catch remain present and functional, though with expected age patina. A pleasing and authentic example of an RFC sweetheart brooch with good colour and charm. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
