*British, WW2, HM Submarine Ultimatum – Original Photograph*

Original Photograph of WW2 Submarine Ultimatum. This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 24.2cm x 14.8cm. Mounted on card. Reverse typed note: "HM/SM Ultimatum ex P34. U Class Submarine. Built Vickers Armstrong, Barrow 1941. Broken up Port Glasgow 1950."

HMS Ultimatum (P34) was a Royal Navy U-class submarine built by Vickers-Armstrong at Barrow-in-Furness and part of the third group of that class. She remains the only Royal Navy vessel to bear the name Ultimatum.

During World War II, Ultimatum operated in the Mediterranean, sinking the Italian passenger ship Dalmatia L., a German sailing vessel, and the Italian submarine Ammiraglio Millo. From January 1943, she was commanded by Lieutenant Hedley Kett. On 30 October 1943, she attacked U-73 southeast of Toulon, though without success. Initially credited with sinking U-431, this was later revised, as U-431 had actually been lost to a British aircraft earlier that month. Ultimatum also made unsuccessful attacks on Italian merchant ships Ravello, Luciano Manara, and Unione, as well as the Italian submarine Zaffiro and German auxiliary patrol vessel Uj 6073 / Nimeth Allah. However, on 2 May 1944, she shelled the harbour at Kalamata, Greece, sinking two sailing vessels, destroying five others on the slips, and damaging another. She later attacked and sank the German barge F 811.

Surviving the war, Ultimatum was sold for scrap on 23 December 1949 and broken up at Port Glasgow in February 1950.
