*British, WW2, 2nd Pattern Fairbairn–Sykes Commando Dagger with Original Leather Sheath*
A 2nd Pattern Fairbairn–Sykes Commando dagger. The 16.3 cm double‑edged blade has the elegant taper and handling qualities of the 2nd pattern. The blade shows even toning with honest wear, leading to the straight oval steel crossguard and distinctive brass chequered grip. The grip is well‑cast with clean, machine‑cut chequering, showing attractive patina with traces of verdigris.
The fitted brown leather scabbard is the correct 2nd Pattern form with integral frog and brass chape crimp‑secured in place (no modern rivets). The leather shows supple age patina with light service wear. The elastic retaining band is present but perished, a classic sign of original, unrestored examples. The stitching is period‑correct machine work with no signs of later alteration.
Historical Note: Introduced in 1942, the Second Pattern Fairbairn–Sykes Commando dagger replaced the earlier First Pattern with its slender guard and large ricasso. The new version featured a straight oval crossguard, a double‑edged spear‑point blade, and a robust brass grip with machine‑cut chequering. Produced primarily by Wilkinson Sword and Sheffield cutlers, the Second Pattern became the signature fighting knife of British Commandos, SOE operatives, and other Allied special forces.
*Condition* The dagger remains in good, honest condition for its age. The double‑edged blade retains its full profile with even age toning and light surface wear consistent with use. The brass chequered grip is well‑cast with crisp detail, showing natural patina and small patches of verdigris. The straight oval steel crossguard is secure with no looseness. The fitted brown leather scabbard is complete and supple, with surface wear from age and use. The integral frog is intact and the brass chape remains firmly crimped in place. The elastic retaining band is present but perished, typical of original, unrestored examples.
