*British, WW1, 1907 Pattern Bayonet by Remington Dated 1915, with Scabbard & Original WW1 Frog*

A well-marked and desirable Pattern 1907 bayonet, officially designated the Sword Bayonet, Pattern 1907 (Mark I). Designed for use with the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) rifle, this was the standard British and Commonwealth bayonet throughout the First World War and into the Second.

This example was manufactured by Remington Arms (U.S. contractor) and is dated 7 ’15 (July 1915), placing it firmly in the early stages of the Great War. The blade is single-edged with a long fuller, measuring 43 cm blade, 55 cm overall, with a steel crossguard and pommel, and wooden grips secured by two screw bolts. The ricasso bears the correct Remington roundel and inspection stamps, including the War Department broad arrow and bend test "X." The pommel slot, working spring release catch, and grips remain intact, showing honest service wear.

It is complete with its No. I Mk. II leather scabbard, fitted with a round frog stud (approved as an option from 1915). The scabbard carries clear markings on the reverse - including a broad arrow and date ’25, confirming post-war reissue, and a large stamped “W”, denoting the post-1923 List of Changes Paragraph 26030 requirement for wax-impregnation treatment of scabbards, intended to improve resistance to tropical and wet climates. A scratched “G” appears above this, likely a later service or ownership mark. Accompanying this is the original WW1 khaki webbing frog, broad arrow stamped, a rare survival in its own right.

Historical Note:
The Pattern 1907 bayonet replaced the earlier long sword bayonets and was purpose-built for the SMLE rifle, the principal British infantry weapon of WW1. Early models featured a hooked quillon, but this was discontinued in 1913, making the straight crossguard the standard wartime variant.

While the majority of production came from British makers such as Enfield, Wilkinson, Sanderson, Vickers, Mole and Chapman, the huge demand of 1915 led to contracts being placed overseas. Remington Arms Co. of Ilion, New York, was contracted from 1915 until 1917, producing approximately 1.2 million Pattern 1907 bayonets before the British cancelled contracts as their own capacity increased. By comparison, British factories produced many millions across the war years, making U.S. Remington examples significantly scarcer today.

The contract run was relatively short-lived (just two years), and many of these bayonets were heavily used in service on the Western Front, Gallipoli, Salonika, and the Middle East campaigns. Surviving examples with clear markings, correct scabbards, and especially original WW1 frogs are therefore particularly desirable.

*Condition*
The bayonet shows honest service wear, with a grey patina to the blade, surface pitting to the pommel, and scuffs to the grips. Markings remain crisp and legible. The locking catch is operational, and the bayonet seats correctly in its scabbard. The scabbard is structurally sound, with the leather body retaining much of its finish, though with surface wear and age-related scuffing. The web frog, though frayed at the top, remains complete with fastening strap and button, its wartime stamp still visible. Overall, a genuine and desirable 1907 Remington bayonet set, complete with scabbard and rare WW1 webbing frog. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
