The Royal Engineers (RE), also known as the Sappers, is a corps of the British Army. In 1911, the RE established the Air Battalion, the first flying unit in the British Armed Forces, which later evolved into the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. During World War I, in response to German trench mining, the RE formed tunneling companies comprising skilled coal miners. These units operated successfully until 1917 when, following the breakdown of static positions, they focused on constructing deep dugouts like the Vampire dugout to shield troops from heavy shelling.
