*British, Mid-19th century, Composite Percussion Coast Guard Pistol with Captive Ramrod, Obsolete Calibre*
A mid-19th century percussion Coast Guard pistol, measuring approximately 34 cm overall with a 21 cm barrel, constructed as a composite arm. The pistol retains its original walnut stock and brass furniture, including brass trigger guard, butt cap with lanyard ring, ramrod pipe, and nose cap. The barrel and lock are later replacements, fitted correctly and in keeping with period practice. The pistol is of obsolete calibre, smooth-bore, with a percussion ignition system. The grip shows honest service wear with good colour and patination throughout, and the overall form closely follows standard British maritime pistol patterns of the period.
Historical Note: British Coast Guard pistols were introduced in the early to mid-19th century for issue to officers and men engaged in anti-smuggling and coastal patrol duties. These pistols were typically robust, short-barrelled arms designed for close-quarters use aboard vessels and along the shoreline. It was common for such pistols to undergo repair, refurbishment, or component replacement during their service lives, particularly barrels and locks, either by Board of Ordnance contractors or later civilian armourers. Composite examples such as this are therefore entirely representative of working maritime arms that remained in use for extended periods.
*Condition* Composite condition, with original stock and brass fittings, and replacement barrel and lock. The wood shows scattered dents, abrasions, and small historic marks consistent with service use. The brass fittings display a pleasing aged patina with minor surface wear. The barrel shows surface oxidation and wear commensurate with age, and the lock fits well and functions correctly on inspection. No cracks observed to the stock. Overall an honest and attractive example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
