*British, Early 20th Century, Royal Marines Sweetheart Brooch, Enamel & Gilt*
A fine early 20th century Royal Marines enamel sweetheart brooch with gilt frame.
A charming enamel and gilt sweetheart brooch depicting the badge of the Royal Marines. The design shows a blue globe encircled by a gold laurel wreath, surmounted by a King’s Crown, with the scrolls reading “Gibraltar” and “The Royal Marines.” The badge is set against a white enamel ground within an ornate gilt frame. Reverse fitted with a simple pin clasp. Dimensions: 3.1cm x 3.5cm.
Historical Note: Sweetheart brooches were popular keepsakes during the late Victorian era through both World Wars, given by servicemen to wives, fiancées or mothers as a token of affection and pride in service. The globe and laurel design has been the emblem of the Royal Marines since 1827, with “Gibraltar” referencing their historic role in the 1704 capture of the fortress. The presence of the King’s Crown suggests this example dates from the reign of George V or George VI, making it an early 20th century piece.
*Condition* The enamel shows minor wear and small surface imperfections consistent with age. Some loss to the gilt finish and light tarnishing to the reverse. The pin fitting is intact though shows green verdigris. A very attractive and original period piece.
