Thomas Bush Hardy (British, 1842-1897), watercolor on paper, seascape with a variety of sailing ships and other vessels on choppy water, town or port in distance, gray skies above, signed and dated 1896 lower right.
Thomas Bush Hardy (1842–1897) was a renowned Sheffield marine painter, celebrated for his depictions of coastal scenes in England, the Netherlands, French Channel ports, and the Venetian Lagoon. He traveled extensively in Holland and Italy, which influenced his art. Hardy exhibited at prestigious institutions including the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the New Watercolour Society, the Fine Art Society, the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour, and the Royal Society of Painters in Oil. His works are housed in major collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum. Hardy passed away in Maida Vale, London, and is buried in Highgate Cemetery in an unmarked grave. He had nine children, including the painter Dudley Hardy and Dorothy Hardy, who received an MBE for her nursing service in World War I.
