*British, c1820, Over and Under Double Barrel Tap Action Flintlock Pocket Pistol with Safety, By Cook of Bath, Obsolete Calibre*
By William Cook, Bath, circa 1820
18cm overall. 4.5cm barrel.
This British over-and-under double barrel pocket pistol is a fine example, featuring 4.5cm turn-off brass barrels for loading. Positioned on the left side is a switch allowing the shooter to select which barrel to discharge. The pan includes a rolling compartment for each barrel, enabling the shooter to swiftly utilize the second shot immediately after firing the first barrel. Alternatively, both barrels could be fired simultaneously. This mechanism, known as a "tap action," was commonly found in two-barrel configurations, although examples with three or even four barrels were also produced. Additionally, a slide safety mechanism located rear of the hammer locks the pan closed and holds the hammer at half-cock.
The brass box lock action includes a steel tap, frizzen pan cover, and cock, accompanied by a top slide safety and a flat-sided walnut slab butt. Markings on the box lock indicate "Bath" on one side and "Cook" on the other. James (d. c 1804) and William Cook were prominent gunsmiths located in Kingsmead St. and Walcot St., Bath, Somerset. Early Birmingham proof marks under the barrel. The proof marks used from 1813 until 1904 were the crossed sceptres and crown mark, incorporating the letters BPC (Birmingham Proof Company), together with the crossed sceptres over a V (the makers mark is in between).
Estimated to have been produced around 1820, this pistol would have been ideally suited for concealed carry in an overcoat pocket for self-defense or for a serving officer to have on hand in case of emergencies.
