*British, c. 1890 – Antique Small Mahogany Wellington Collectors Chest, Signed B. Shepherd*

A fine late-Victorian miniature Wellington-type collector’s cabinet in solid mahogany, the case with carved foliate corner blocks and a hinged locking side pilaster securing six drawers when closed. The lock is present (no key). Each drawer retains its original turned bone knobs; the uppermost drawer is lined in deep blue velvet and neatly impressed “B. SHEPHERD.” Secondary timbers and dovetailed construction throughout reflect high-quality workshop craftsmanship. An excellent piece of furniture and useful for all types of small collections.

Dimensions: 36.8 cm wide × 23 cm deep × 46.3 cm high

Historical Note:
A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow form of chest of drawers distinguished by a hinged locking bar on one side. It takes its name from Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, who reputedly commissioned a secure, portable storage cabinet for his campaign equipment and personal papers. The design allowed multiple drawers to be locked simultaneously with a single key, offering both practicality and security for travel.

Miniature examples such as the present cabinet were fashionable during the late-19th century among naturalists and collectors, providing elegant and secure storage for coins, medals, minerals, or other small specimens. The stamped name B. Shepherd likely denotes a provincial cabinetmaker or specialist outfitter producing bespoke collectors’ furniture of this type.

*Condition*
In good original condition with a rich, even patina to the mahogany. Minor age-related marks, small shrinkage lines and surface wear consistent with age and use. The side lock is intact but lacking its key. Drawers run smoothly; knobs appear original; velvet lining shows gentle fading and light dust. Structurally sound and displays beautifully. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
