*British, c.1800, India Pattern “Brown Bess” Flintlock Musket by T. Potts, London, with Original Socket Bayonet & Sling, Obsolete Calibre*

An impressive late-Georgian commercial Brown Bess musket of India Pattern form, calibre .75 in, by T. Potts of London, complete with socket bayonet and sling. The flat lockplate is crisply engraved T. POTTS / LONDON, with a small crowned broad-arrow inspection stamp to the rear. The 98 cm (38½ in.) barrel bears London commercial proof marks — Crown over CP, Crown over V, and a small heart-shaped private viewer’s mark — all consistent with the London Gunmakers’ Company system in use circa 1795–1810. Beside the proofs is an Arabic inscription, likely reading عطر الله - ‘Itar Allah’ (“Fragrance of God”), denoting later East-Indian or colonial arsenal service.

The musket follows the full India Pattern configuration: pinned barrel, full-length walnut stock, and brass furniture throughout — flat butt-plate, trigger-guard with acorn finial, ramrod pipes, and fore-end cap. It retains its original iron ramrod. The flintlock holds positively on half- and full-cock, with a crisp action and tight frizzen. An aged white leather sling is fitted beneath the trigger-guard bow. The musket has been sympathetically refurbished, the metalwork lightly cleaned and the stock re-finished while preserving its period character and markings.

Accompanying the musket is a triangular-section socket bayonet, standard Brown Bess pattern, 38.3 cm (15 in.) blade and 49.3 cm (19.4 in.) overall. The socket retains its locking ring and lug slot, showing a stable longitudinal split from the forging process — typical of early wrought manufacture. Surface with smooth grey patina and scattered pitting, matching the musket’s condition.

Measurements:
– Overall length: 138.5 cm / 54½ in.
– Barrel length: 98 cm / 38½ in.
– Bayonet blade: 38.3 cm / 15 in.
– Bayonet overall: 49.3 cm / 19.4 in.
– Calibre: .75 in. (smoothbore, obsolete calibre)

Historical Note:
Although universally known as the “India Pattern” Brown Bess, this designation originally referred to the simplified musket developed by the East India Company in 1793 and later adopted by the Board of Ordnance as its 3rd Model service musket. During the Napoleonic Wars, the enormous demand for arms led London and Birmingham gunmakers to produce both government and commercial contract examples to the same pattern.

Thomas Potts was among the most capable and prolific of the London gunmakers of his era. Apprenticed in 1792 and admitted a Freeman of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1801, he entered into partnership with Martin Brander the following year, trading as Brander & Potts from 1802 until Brander’s death in 1827. The firm supplied muskets, carbines, and pistols to both the Board of Ordnance and the East India Company, producing large quantities of arms to Ordnance and India Pattern specifications. After 1827, Potts continued the business independently under his own name as T. Potts, London.

Surviving firearms bearing his mark are found in both Ordnance and East India Company contexts, typically with London commercial proofs and private inspection stamps. The present musket, built to India Pattern form but commercially proofed in London, represents Potts’s early independent production and typifies the contract-grade weapons supplied for colonial and militia service. Its form, proof marks, and later Arabic inscription strongly suggest subsequent issue or arsenal service in India, where such arms remained in use under British and princely control well into the mid-19th century.

*Condition*
Very good for age and presentation. Metal surfaces with even patina and light pitting, markings clear and sharp. Stock solid, cleanly re-finished with small repairs around the lock and side-plate, and several minor handling dents. Brass furniture with mellow age tone. Lock mechanism crisp and functional. Front sight absent. Bayonet shows age staining and a small split to the socket but is structurally sound. Sling period-style, possibly later replacement. A sympathetically refurbished yet well-preserved example of a London-made Brown Bess of India Pattern type. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
