*British Army, Royal Lancers : 17th–21st Lancers Deaths Head - Skull and Crossbones “Or Glory” Cap Badge, Brass Lugs*
A striking and highly collectable British cavalry-style skull and crossbones cap badge featuring the famous “Or Glory” motto scroll beneath, executed in brass with twin lug fittings to the reverse. Measuring approximately 5cm x 4.5cm, this is the classic death’s head pattern long associated with the 17th Lancers and later inherited by successor cavalry formations including the 17th/21st Lancers and ultimately reflected in the insignia traditions of the Royal Lancers.
The badge displays the iconic skull over crossed bones with the curved lower scroll bearing the motto “OR GLORY,” the shortened form of the famous regimental motto “Death or Glory.” This dramatic emblem became one of the most recognisable badges in the British Army, originally adopted by the 17th (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) Lancers following the regiment’s service in the 18th century and immortalised through later campaigns including the Charge of the Light Brigade. Following amalgamations, the badge remained strongly associated with the 17th/21st Lancers and later cavalry lineage.
The reverse shows the expected twin lug fittings with retaining washers present. Construction and finish are consistent with a mid-20th century service dress cap badge rather than the earlier Victorian or Edwardian officer-quality die-struck examples. The form strongly suggests post-WWII issue, likely for the 17th/21st Lancers period rather than an original pre-1922 17th Lancers example.
Approx. Measurements – Width: 5 cm. Height: 4.5 cm.
History Note: The “Death or Glory” skull badge is one of the most famous symbols in British cavalry history. First adopted by the 17th Lancers, it became synonymous with lancer regiments and elite cavalry service. The regiment served with distinction from the Napoleonic Wars through the Victorian campaigns and into the modern era, with the skull-and-crossbones badge surviving through amalgamation into the 17th/21st Lancers and later the Royal Lancers. Its instantly recognisable form makes it one of the most desirable British cavalry cap badges for collectors.
