*British Army Officer’s Rank Pip, Second Lieutenant, Gilt & Enamel Bath Star Shoulder Insignia*
A British Army officer’s rank star, or “pip,” in gilt metal with coloured enamel detailing, representing the Order of the Bath star. The badge is of traditional eight-point form with blue enamel laurel wreath, red enamel motto band, and central three-crowns device. The reverse retains its original twin-wire shoulder mounting fitting with looped top and sliding retainers. A classic piece of British officer’s insignia, intended for wear on shoulder straps or epaulettes. Approx. 2.4 cm x 2.4 cm.
Historical Note: The British Army officer’s “pip” is based on the insignia of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, a chivalric order closely associated with military service and state honour. In army rank usage, one pip denotes the rank of Second Lieutenant, two pips a Lieutenant, and three pips a Captain. This gilt and enamel form was widely used through the 20th century, including the Second World War and post-war period, on service dress and other officer uniforms.
*Condition* Good overall condition for age, with light service wear and some minor rubbing to the gilt finish. Enamel remains largely intact with small areas of wear visible under close inspection. Reverse mounting wires and retainers are present, with some age-related tarnish and oxidation. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
