*British, 33rd (The Duke of Wellington’s) Regiment of Foot 1812 Pattern “Belgic” Shako Plate*
Circa 1812–1816 | Waterloo Period
An original pressed brass shako plate of the 33rd Regiment of Foot, intended for wear on the 1812 Pattern “Belgic” shako during the Napoleonic Wars.
The plate is of shield form, surmounted by a crown, and bears the interlaced “GVR” cypher (Georgius Rex) for King George III beneath the Royal Crown. Below the cypher appears the regimental number “33”, identifying the 33rd Regiment of Foot.
The reverse retains its original fixing lugs, confirming period construction and correct method of attachment to the stiff felt Belgic shako.
Approx. Measurements - Height: 13 cm; Width: 8.5 cm
Material: Pressed brass
Historical Note:
The 33rd Regiment of Foot is famously associated with Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, who commanded the regiment earlier in his career. By the time of the Battle of Waterloo (1815), the regiment was part of Wellington’s army in the final campaign against Napoleon.
The 1812 Pattern “Belgic” shako replaced earlier lighter caps and featured a taller, stiffened body with a prominent brass front plate such as this example. The design was both practical and highly decorative, intended to present a uniform and imposing appearance in line and on parade.
The 33rd fought at Quatre Bras (16 June 1815) and Waterloo (18 June 1815), sustaining heavy engagement during the campaign. The regiment would later formally adopt the title “The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment.”
Original Waterloo-period Belgic shako plates from identified regiments remain highly sought after due to their direct association with the closing phase of the Napoleonic Wars.
*Condition*
The plate displays a pleasing, untouched patina consistent with early 19th-century brass. Surface wear and minor age-related marks are present, as expected. The reverse lugs remain intact. No modern repairs observed. Please see photographs as part of the condition report. A strong example of a Waterloo-era regimental shako plate from one of the most historically significant British line regiments.
