Typed on the reverse: Commended in the "single shot" section was this picture of the Leander class frigate HMS Ariadne in rough seas. The photograph was taken by the Fleet submarine HMS Turbulent (Commander Tim Lightoller).

HMS Ariadne was a Leander-class frigate launched in 1971, serving in the Royal Navy until 1992. Built by Yarrow Shipbuilders, she was the last of the Leander class to be completed. Ariadne was 372 feet long and had a displacement of 2,500 tons, powered by steam turbines capable of reaching 28 knots. Armed with a 4.5-inch gun, Sea Cat missile launcher, and anti-submarine capabilities, she also featured a Westland Wasp helicopter for extended operations.

During her service, Ariadne undertook various deployments, including fishery protection during the Second Cod War, a Far East tour in 1974, and participation in NATO's Standing Naval Force Atlantic in 1979. She also served as the West Indies Guard Ship in the 1980s and was involved in Cold War operations, including shadowing Soviet warships. In 1989, she replaced HMS Juno in the Dartmouth Training Squadron and undertook a global circumnavigation as part of Endeavour '90.

Ariadne was adopted by Scunthorpe Borough Council in 1973, with her anchor and bell displayed in local civic buildings. After decommissioning in 1992, she was sold to Chile and renamed General Baquedano. The ship was decommissioned by Chile in 1998 and sunk as a target in 2004.
