*British, 1908 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword by Enfield, with Scabbard*

A fine and well-marked example of the British 1908 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Sword, manufactured by the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield (EFD). This was the final service sword officially issued to British cavalry, designed purely as a thrusting weapon rather than a traditional cut-and-thrust sabre, reflecting the shift in cavalry tactics in the early 20th century.

The sword measures approximately 88 cm blade length and 109 cm overall, with a straight, spear-pointed blade and a long fuller running nearly its entire length. The ricasso bears crisp markings including the British military broad arrow, "EFD" for Enfield, inspection and acceptance stamps, and the “X” bend-test proof mark confirming its strength. The spine is stamped with a "P" for proofing and "08", denoting the 1908 pattern. The bowl guard is large and protective, showing service wear, small dents, and a deep, honest patina consistent with field use. The wooden grip features well-defined checkering for improved handling and includes a broad arrow stamp to the back spine, further confirming military issue. The domed steel pommel and peened tang nut remain secure, with age-related oxidation visible.

The original steel scabbard, present and correct, has twin suspension rings and a pronounced throat. It exhibits significant surface patina and flaking paint, along with areas of pitting and corrosion — typical of swords exposed to field or stable storage conditions.

Historical Note
The 1908 Pattern sword marked the culmination of British cavalry sword design, focusing entirely on the thrust as the most effective combat method. It saw service during World War I and in some regiments into the interwar years, as well as later ceremonial use. Surviving examples with strong markings and original scabbards are increasingly scarce and highly regarded by collectors.

*Condition*
Blade is bright with some light surface spotting and age marks, but retains a sound edge and sharp thrusting point. Guard exhibits dings, scratches, and a deep, even patina. Grip is solid with minor shrinkage and age cracks but remains structurally firm. Scabbard is structurally sound but heavily patinated with flaked finish and corrosion spots. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
