*Balkan / Ottoman, Late 18th Century, Flintlock Holster Pistol, BANCHI Lock & Barrel, Italian Export, Obsolete Calbre*

A highly attractive and characterful late 18th century flintlock holster pistol of classic Balkan / Ottoman form, fitted with an Italian export lock and barrel both signed “BANCHI.” This is a textbook example of the East–West arms trade of the period, combining quality Italian mechanical components with a locally crafted and richly decorated Balkan stock.

The pistol displays the distinctive curved grip terminating in a large domed brass “ball” pommel, along with extensive brass mounts and inlaid decoration running along the grip and fore-end. The side panels are further enhanced with applied brass foliate elements, giving the piece strong visual presence and unmistakable regional identity.

Both the lock and barrel are marked “BANCHI,” a name associated with the Italian gunmaking trade—most likely from Brescia—whose locks and barrels were widely exported across the Ottoman world. The barrel additionally carries multiple clover / fleur-de-lis type proof or workshop marks, along with further small inspection stamps, including a stylised “H”-form mark typical of Brescian production and assembly processes.

This is not a purely Italian-made pistol, but rather a composite piece typical of the period: Italian-made lock and barrel components assembled and stocked in the Balkans, resulting in a distinctive hybrid form prized both for function and status.

A fine and honest example with excellent display appeal, now confirmed as retaining its original matched Italian barrel and lock.

Approx. Measurements – Barrel length: 24.3 cm. Overall length: 41 cm.

History Note:
During the 18th century, Northern Italian gunmaking centres—particularly Brescia—were among the most important suppliers of firearm components to the Mediterranean and Ottoman worlds. Locks and barrels were produced in large quantities and exported eastward, where they were stocked and decorated by local craftsmen in regions such as the Balkans.

Pistols of this type were commonly carried by mounted troops, tribal fighters, and wealthy individuals. The bold brass decoration and distinctive pommel forms became hallmarks of Balkan and Ottoman firearms, blending practical weaponry with strong elements of personal display and status. Examples retaining matching Italian-marked barrels and locks, as seen here, are particularly desirable.
