*Australian, WW1, HMA Submarine AE1 (RAN) – Original Photograph*

Original Photograph WW1 Submarine AE1 (RAN). This photograph originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007.

Approximate Dimensions: 19cm x 11.3cm

HMAS AE1, an E-Class Submarine and the first submarine of the Royal Australian Navy, sank with all hands in 1914 near East New Britain. After decades of intermittent searches, her wreck was located in December 2017 off the Duke of York Islands at a depth of 300 meters. Surveys revealed her ventilation shaft was about 60% open and both bow and stern caps were partially open, suggesting she was combat-ready before exceeding her crush depth. The wreck remains a classified war grave.

Memorials for AE1 include a stained-glass window at Garden Island in Sydney, a floating stainless steel wreath outside the Australian National Maritime Museum, and a memorial plaque at the Tasmanian Seafarers' Memorial in Triabunna, commemorating those lost with the submarine.
