A c1600 English Cup Hilt Rapier

Here we have an absolutely beautiful weapon, meant to be part sword and part status symbol, a weapon that would have been a symbol of nobility and danger. These rapiers were carried both in war, street combat and deuls of honour.

The swords guard is in the English style with a delicately cut steel and pierced guard, the vestigial quillons forming finger rings inside the cup.

The fuller bears an inscription that has faded but is clearly the inscription of the maker.

The grip has been covered in a steel wire.

The pommel is solid and oval in shape with the cut steel figures of a man and woman among other decoration.

This sword dates from around the year 1600 and is stylistically very English and a stunning example of the form.
