*19th Century, Percussion Sporting Musket, Ideal Wall Hanger, Obsolete Calibre*
A 19th century percussion sporting musket, unmarked and of plain working design. This example is full-length with an 85.5cm barrel (125cm overall), fitted with a percussion lock, single trigger, and wooden stock with chequered wrist and patch box to the butt. The musket retains its original iron ramrod and sling swivels. The gun shows a deep age patina to the metalwork with areas of surface rust and pitting. The stock displays age cracks and handling wear but retains good colour and attractive grain. The lock is unmarked and remains functional, cocking and dry firing as intended.
Historical Note:
Percussion sporting muskets such as this were widely produced from the 1830s onwards, bridging the gap between the earlier flintlock fowling pieces and later cartridge sporting rifles. They were popular with gentlemen sportsmen and settlers alike, providing reliable firepower for both game and personal protection. Unmarked examples were often made for private sale or export, particularly to the colonies, where practicality was prioritised over embellishment. Today they survive mainly as collector’s curios or decorative displays, offering a tangible connection to the sporting traditions of the Victorian era.
