~ 19th Century Large Mahogany Writing Slope ~
A handsome large 19th century mahogany writing slope.
The writing slope is of mahogany with brass fittings. It is fitted with a brass lock and a small brass plaque to the top engraved with a monogram.
When the lid is first opened it reveals a flat ‘slope’ of green baize. The lid stays upright and contains a fold down tray. There is also a lidded
compartments to store pens etc, complete with two glass ink wells with brass lids.
When opened further it reveals a double fold out green baize slope.
Both parts of the slope also open to reveal storage space. The top part has a brass lock (the key is long gone) and the bottom part is fixed with brass
catches.
Each side of the box is fitted with a brass fold out handle. As well as being used to carry the slope one is also the handle to a secret pull out drawer,
which with the addition of a brass pin can only be accessed when the slope is open.
Included with the slope are a wood and brass monogrammed stamp and some paperwork dated to the 1870’s relating to a previous owner which has
been stored in one of the compartments for many many years. The paperwork and stamp belonged to a Mr Thomas Francis Welbourne. Mr Welbourne
seems to have no historical significance but this just adds a nice bit of history to the piece and it is fascinating to think these letters were handwritten
upon this slope nearly 150 years ago. The letters, dated to the 1870’s also helps to date the slope.
~ Dimensions ~
The slope when closed measures 50cm (19 ¾ inches) by 30cm (12 inches) with a height of 19.5cm (7 ¾ inches).
When fully opened the piece has a length of 53.5cm (21 inches).
It weighs 8.58Kg.
~ Condition ~
The brass fittings have some oxidation and the wood has the odd small scratch.
There is a small split to the bottom of the side drawer.
The keys are missing as is one of the small compartment lids.
The green baize is in decent condition with just the odd mark.
Overall the slope is in a very good condition for its age.
