~ 1977 Royal Engineers Staff Sergeant No. 10 Mess Dress ~

The uniform we have here is a 20th century Royal Engineers No. 10 Mess Uniform. It’s the formal uniform of the NCO’s of the Royal Engineers and a very good example.

It’s a complete example with the short jacket, waistcoat, sash and trousers.

The badges shown are the flaming artillery grenade, differentiating from the Royal Artillery grenade with nine flames rather than seven, with the motto ‘UBIQUE’ meaning everywhere.

As a regiment granted the ‘royal’ prefix they have an embroidered crown shown on the sleeve.

The buttons are unmarked but are the NCO button with the Royal Engineers insignia.

The labeling shows this was tailored by Alkit in London for a Staff Sergeant named D T Black in 1977. They are no longer in business but the quality of the jacket is superb.

~ Dimensions ~

The jacket is 20 inches (51 cm) from collar to tail.

The length of the sleeve is 24 inches (61 cm).

The distance between armpits is 16 inches (40 cm).

The length of the trousers is 39 inches (100 cm).

The diameter of the waist is 14 inches (35 cm).

The waistcoat is 18 inches from collar to tail (46 cm).

The waistcoat is 12 inches across the back (30 cm).

The sash is 32 inches long (81 cm).

The uniform weighs 1.8 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The uniform is in very good condition.

The uniform has some discolouring to the white lining of the waistcoat.
