1856 Pattern Saw-back Pioneer Sword

1800s British Saw-back Hanger

Out of stock

SKU: RMQJA_652364536 Category:

This is the only type of saw-back sword made for the British army and it was issued to the Pioneers within each infantry battalion. The job of the pioneers was to travel ahead of the main army to clear a path and carry out construction for the following army. The blade could be used as a saw or a machete for cutting wood and vines. This meant that the sword could replace the typical axe and saw carried by the soldiers. The sword comes with its original scabbard and is regimentally marked for the Yorkshire Light Infantry with a rack number of 10.

*Condition*

The sword is in excellent condition with clear markings on the blade and hilt and some minor pitting on the blade. The scabbard is also in a very nice condition but the tip seems to have been repaired or altered. Please see pictures for more detail as these form part of our condition report.
