17th Century Transitional English Rapier

SKU: JA_579447014 Category:

Here we have an absolutely beautiful weapon from one of the most interesting times in English history. This weapon was the civilian weapon to own for anyone who wanted to show their wealth and prowess as it meant you had the money to afford the sword but also the funds and social standing to train at a fencing school.

The swords guard is in the English style with a smaller cup hilt, a knucklebow and a ring attached to the quillons that also form the finger ring.

The rapier blade has an oval section blade and a short fuller.

The fuller bears an inscription that is badly faded but as an educated guess we can assume one side will bear the inscription of the sword maker and the other would be the nation or city of manufacture, inscriptions like this are commonly seen on German export swords.

The grip has been covered in a brass wire twist or cast to appear as wire..

The pommel appears to be solid or filled with a lighter metal.

The entire guard of the sword has been etched and decorated with floral and vine designs.

From the cross section of the blade and the smaller size of the hilt we can assume this sword is part of the transitioning people

~ Dimensions ~

The blade is 41.75 inches long (106 cm) long.

The sword is 49 inches(125 cm) long.

The guard is 5.2 inches (13.2 cm) long.

The sword weighs 895 g.

~ Condition ~

The sword is in excellent condition for its age, the blade keeping good form.
