Early Shinto Period (1600-1764) unsigned Wakizashi Sword

The unsigned blade is from circa 1600, it is fitted for use by a Japanese officer in WW2.

Shinto, translated as "new swords", entered the common vernacular in Meiji time. It refers to swords made with new materials and new methods, both enhanced by better technologies. The metal used for manufacturing these swords was steel extracted from ore.

The hamon on the blade has a narrow notare/gunome. The haba has regular itame in hiraji.

The sword comes with its Kasira (the pommel) and fuci (the ring between the grip and guard). The fuci has gilt over black painted brass decorations.

The steel tsuba (the guard) has traditional Japanese 'dragon' engravings.

The habaki (the rain guard) is from polished brass.

The grip is of bound white snakeskin.

The sword comes with its wooden scabbard with the leather combat cover.

~ Dimensions ~

The blade has a length of 21.4 inches (54.5 cm) from top to guard, with the sword measuring 31.6 inches (80.5 cm) overall, and 32.2 inches (82 cm) when sheathed. It weighs 988 g in total.

~ Condition ~

There is minimum wear to the blade as seen in the pictures.

All its fittings are in very good order.

The scabbard has some very minor wear as expected for its age and use. The stitching is excellent.
