Historical Background

During the 2nd century BC, the Iberian Peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal) was undergoing a profound transformation. After the Second Punic War (218–201 BC), Rome gradually expanded its dominance across Hispania.
However, many Celtiberian tribes — such as the Arevaci, Belli, Lusones, and Titti — maintained their own strong regional identities. These tribes occupied the rugged interior of central and northern Spain and became both allies and adversaries of Rome at various times.

The coinage from this period, often called Roman–Celtiberian, reflects the coexistence and fusion of Roman monetary standards with indigenous Iberian artistry, language, and symbolism. These coins mark the period between the Celtiberian Wars (181–133 BC) and the final Romanization of Hispania.
