Castulo (modern Cazlona, near Linares in Jaén, Andalusia) was an important Iberian and later Romanized city in southern Spain. It occupied a strategic position near the upper Guadalquivir River and controlled routes between the mining districts of the Sierra Morena and the Mediterranean coast.
Originally a city of the Oretani tribe, Castulo came under Carthaginian influence during the 3rd century BC, and was the birthplace of Hannibal’s wife, Imilce, according to tradition. After the Second Punic War (218–201 BC), it allied with Rome and became a Roman municipium (self-governing city) under the Republic.
By the 1st century BC, Castulo was a prosperous provincial centre with a fully Romanized administration, language, and coinage system.
