*British, WWI, Royal Aircraft Factory ‘On War Service’ Lapel Badge, King’s Crown*
A scarce First World War Royal Aircraft Factory war-worker lapel badge, gilt brass with a crowned RAF monogram and outstretched wings, the outer circlet lettered PRO REGE AC FIDE (“For King and Faith”). Originally issued with an enamelled border, this example shows the stippled engine-turned ground where the enamel has been lost, a common feature on badges that saw heavy factory use. Reverse appears to be unmarked. Dimensions: 2.8cm tall x 2cm wide.
Historical Note: From late 1914, “On War Service” badges were issued to essential munitions and aircraft workers, allowing them to demonstrate their contribution to the war effort at a time when men not in uniform risked accusations of shirking. The Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough produced its own distinctive badge, with the initials “RAF” (then meaning Royal Aircraft Factory, not Royal Air Force). The factory was central to the design and development of British aircraft during WWI, later becoming the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1918.
*Condition* Honest age patination to the gilt metal. The enamel border is now absent, revealing the stippled background detail beneath. Light wear consistent with age and service use. Reverse is unmarked, with original pin and catch present. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
