*British, Brass Nautical Miles Gauge, Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company Limited, London*

Approximate measurements: 19cm diameter x 7cm depth

The Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Company was established in April 1864 through the merger of the Gutta Percha Company and Glass, Elliot & Company. Its initial major undertaking involved laying a transatlantic telegraph cable between Ireland and Newfoundland on behalf of the Atlantic Telegraph Company. Although the first attempt in 1865 was unsuccessful, they succeeded in 1866. Additionally, the cable lost during the 1865 attempt was retrieved and repaired later that year, resulting in two fully functional transatlantic cables. The company subsequently laid numerous submarine cables worldwide and became a prominent player in global telecommunications. In 1959, it was acquired by British Callender's Cables.

This particular item is a brass-cased, wall-mountable piece that exudes craftsmanship. It features a wood turner over the dial, though its functionality is currently unverified. A striking display piece, it measures approximately 20 cm in diameter (excluding wall-mounting brackets) and is about 7 cm deep, making it a substantial and visually appealing artefact.
