Ithaca Gun Company alone manufactured 400,000 M1911A1 pistols from 1943 to 1945. Established in Ithaca, New York, in 1883, the Ithaca Gun Company, founded by William Henry Baker and Leroy Smith, played a pivotal role in the early industry of Tompkins County. Notable patrons included John Philip Sousa, Annie Oakley, and Alfred Lee Loomis.
Approximately 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols were procured by the U.S. military during their service life, serving as the standard-issue sidearm from 1911 to 1985. Widely used in major conflicts such as World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
