Japan's national flag, known as Hinomaru or "Disk of the Sun," is depicted on this sizable cotton Japanese flag, a common style featuring traditional leather reinforcing patches. Dating back to ancient times, the red Sun Disc or Hinomaru symbolizes Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, holding significant cultural importance in Japan. This World War2  flag is likely a souvenir brought back by a returning GI.
