The medal was instituted on 1 September 1939 by Adolf Hitler as Germany’s primary combat decoration for bravery and leadership in the field.
Awarded to recognise battlefield merit below the level required for the Iron Cross 1st Class, the EK2 was worn in the buttonhole on its ribbon on parade and as a ribbon bar on daily service tunics.
