This bayonet is marked on the pommel's side with the inscription 'Ross Rifle Co. Quebec. Patented 1907.' It also features the War arrow marking, the numbers '12, 12/16,' the Crown cypher, and a '4,' on the reverse and the Crown Cypher and a 4 on the tang indicating its compatibility with the Lee-Enfield rifle. The leather scabbard bears the engraving 'MK 11, 1916,' along with a war arrow and the initials 'RRC' (Ross Rifle Co.) on the tip, confirming its early production. The back of the hanger has the letters RR 1123 engraved. The scabbard includes internal mounts and features an integrated belt hanger.

The Ross Rifle Bayonet was originally designed for use with the Ross Rifle, a Canadian-manufactured military rifle in the early 20th century. This rifle's history stems from a diplomatic dispute during the Second Boer War when Canada sought to produce the Lee–Enfield SMLE in-country but was denied a license by the United Kingdom. Sir Charles Ross proposed to fund a Canadian factory for his newly developed straight-pull rifle, which was accepted by the Liberal government of Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The initial contract in 1903 yielded 12,000 Mark I Ross rifles. Subsequent modifications resulted in the Mark II Ross (Model 05 (1905)), and in 1907, the Mk II was adapted to handle the higher-pressure .280 Ross ammunition, becoming the Mk II. However, due to ongoing issues with the rifle, the 1st Canadian Division replaced all Ross rifles with Enfields on June 12, 1915. Around 65,000 Ross Mk. III rifles and Mk. II bayonets were produced for a British contract between 1914 and 1917, bearing British inspection and acceptance marks.
