A good Victorian era sword stick fitted with a natural stag antler handle and containing a long square-section steel blade. The stick retains its original black lacquered shaft and metal ferrule, with the removable grip forming the sword hilt.
The blade is of four-sided spike form, typical of late 19th century cane swords, and is stamped SOLINGEN, indicating manufacture in the well-known German blade-making centre whose products were widely exported to Britain during the Victorian period.
The handle is formed from a natural stag antler section, carved and polished to create an L-shaped grip, a popular style in the late 19th century for both walking sticks and sword sticks. The ferrule and internal mount appear original, and the blade fits correctly within the cane.
Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 77.3 cm. Overall sword length: 85.5 cm. Overall walking stick length: 90 cm. Grip length: 11 cm.
Historical Note: Sword sticks (also known as cane swords) were fashionable and practical accessories throughout the 19th century, particularly during the Victorian period. They served both as walking aids and as discreet self-defence weapons, commonly carried by gentlemen travelling in towns or on the continent.
Blades marked Solingen were widely imported into Britain, as Solingen in Germany was one of Europe’s principal centres of sword and knife manufacture. Many English retailers fitted these imported blades into locally made canes, resulting in combinations such as this example with a stag antler grip and lacquered wooden shaft.
Four-sided spike blades were especially common in late Victorian sword sticks, being strong, narrow, and easily concealed within a slim cane.
