*Victorian, Antique Walking Stick with Carved Parrot’s Head Handle*
A characterful antique walking stick featuring a finely carved parrot’s head handle, complete with a black painted beak and inset orange glass eyes lending a lifelike expression. The handle sits above a simple metal collar, mounted on an ebonised hardwood shaft, tapering to a fitted metal ferrule. Length 90cm.
Historical Note Animal-themed walking sticks and canes became highly fashionable in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, reflecting both exotic travel and the growing popularity of natural history. Birds, particularly parrots, symbolised the allure of the tropics and were prized for their bright plumage and associations with exploration and empire. Such decorative canes often served not only as practical accessories but also as subtle displays of taste and social standing. The use of coloured glass eyes added a realistic touch, a technique borrowed from the taxidermy trade of the period.
*Condition* The carving is well executed with crisp detailing to the parrot’s head. The painted beak retains good colour, though with minor rubbing and small losses. The metal collar shows wear. The hardwood shaft is sound, straight, and attractively ebonised, with expected handling wear from use. Ferrule present, with age-related wear to the base. Overall, a well-preserved and visually appealing example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
