The M1917 bayonet made its debut in World War I, initially used by American soldiers on the Western Front. Modeled after the British Pattern 1913 bayonet, which was derived from the Pattern 1907 bayonet, the M1917 featured a lengthy 17-inch blade. While primarily intended for the M1917 rifle, it could also be used with all "trench" shotguns of the time. Essentially a replica of the British P14 bayonet, the M1917 retained the transverse cuts in the grip panels, which distinguished it from the P1907 bayonet in British service based solely on the height of the muzzle ring.
The US M1917 Sword Bayonet (manufactured by Remington in 1917) for the Model 1917 30-06 Rifle comes with a steel-mounted green leather scabbard. Its ricasso bears the markings "1917 Remington" on one side and "U.S, Flaming Grenade" on the other. The bayonet features a steel pommel, walnut grips secured by slot head bolts and slotted round nuts.
The leather scabbard is the second pattern Maxim Scabbard, where the M1910 belt hanger is integrated with the top mount. In U.S. service, the leather scabbard body was painted green. Designed and patented by U.S. inventor Hiram Percy Maxim, son of Hiram Stevens Maxim, inventor of the "Maxim Silencer" and the Maxim machine gun, the scabbard's body bears the marking "Jewell-1918," manufactured by the Jewell Belting Co. of Hartford, CT, in 1918. The initials "E.H." likely denote the inspector's mark.
