*USA, c.1880–1900, American Gambler’s Push Dagger with Playing Card Inlays, with Original Sheath*
A rare American gambler’s push dagger, c.1880–1900, with card-suit inlay grip and its original sheath – a scarce and highly collectable survival of the Old West saloon and riverboat era.
A scarce and highly evocative antique American gambler’s push dagger, designed in the classic T-handle form. The dagger has a pointed double-edged steel blade with a short ricasso, housed in its original brown leather sheath with white metal mounts. The grip is of dark hardwood, inlaid with four polished white-metal suit symbols – heart, club, diamond, and spade – directly linking this weapon to the gambling culture of the American frontier.
Length (unsheathed): 15.8 cm
This is an exceptionally rare survival, as very few gambler’s push daggers retain their original sheaths. Given their small size, leather sheaths were easily lost or damaged, and most surviving examples are now sheathless.
Historical Note:
Push daggers (sometimes called vest daggers or sleeve daggers) were compact, easily concealed weapons that became especially associated with the gamblers, card sharps, and saloon-keepers of the American West. They could be slipped discreetly into a waistcoat pocket, boot, or sleeve, and drawn instantly in a confrontation.
This example, decorated with the four card suits, is especially significant, evoking the riverboat and frontier gambling halls of the late 19th century. The direct reference to playing cards makes it not just a weapon but a symbolic accessory of the trade – a reminder of the dangers of the gaming tables.
*Condition*
The blade shows a natural age patina with light speckled pitting, but remains in solid condition. The hardwood grip is secure, with all decorative inlays intact. The sheath survives remarkably well, with the leather retaining its form and the metal mounts showing only light tarnish. Overall, this is an unusually complete and attractive survival.
