- History -
The basic bolo knife, which the US military had been using since the turn of the century, continued to be in service up to the Second World War. Initially, the bolo was exclusively provided to the Hospital Corps, as the long, machete-like weapon was predominantly used to clear foliage in jungle environments, and for any activity that required a chopping tool. It was during the Philippine-American War of 1899-1902 that American soldiers were introduced to this native weapon and came to appreciate its practicality.
This variant though originated from the Springfield 1903 pattern bolo bayonet, identical to the bayonet but without bayonet fittings.
