*US Model 1850 Union Staff & Field Officer Sword and Scabbard, Made in India*
The Model 1850 Union Staff & Field Officer Sword features an etched 79cm blade blade with 'US' on one side and the motto 'Pluribus Unum'- Out of Many One and 'etched designs including the symbolic eagle with a shield. The word engraved word "India" is discernable on the ricasso. Gilt brass 3/4-basket hilt with pierced base plate having scrolling foliation & carved with oak leaves and 'US' between the branches. Thick short rear comma-shaped quillon bent slightly towards back of blade. D-shaped brass knuckle guard pierced at end for sword knot & plugged into pommel carved with oak leaves at its base, while the grip is wood wrapped in black leather. Includes a black steel scabbard with brass accents and hanging rings. During the years before the war, many Confederate officers, including General Robert E. Lee carried this sword in the Indian campaigns.
*Condition*
The brass wrap is missing from the wooden handle. There is a small chip to the wooden handle below the pommel on both sides and the pommel is slightly loose. The motto should be 'E Pluribus Unum' but the E has been omitted. The blade shows some signs of wear and tear but is in generally good condition. with some pitting and scratching towards the tip. The scabbard is in good condition with some minor dings to the brass and some scratching of the black paintwork. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
