*US Military, Vietnam Era, XM3 Clamp-On Bipod for AR-15 and M16, Stamped 19204-8448457, MFR 26767*
Original US military-pattern clamp-on bipod for the AR-15 / M16 rifle family, of the pressed-steel folding type with spring-loaded mounting head. The bipod is of the XM3 / M3 pattern, with two stamped steel legs joined by a riveted hinge, each leg with turned foot and strengthening rib to the outer face. The mounting head is of the correct channel form with internal spring, designed to clip onto the rifle without screws or tools.
The left leg is stamped: 19204-8448457 / MFR. 26767
This type of marking is associated with US military contract production bipods for the M16 series, most commonly encountered on Vietnam-era or later pattern examples.
Approx. Measurements – Leg length: 31 cm. Span when open: 36 cm.
Historical Note: Clamp-on bipods of this type were developed for the early AR-15 / M16 rifle to provide a lightweight field support without the need for permanent modification to the weapon. The XM3 / M3 pattern bipod was produced by a number of US contractors under military contract, often marked with part numbers rather than commercial branding.
These bipods saw use during the Vietnam War period and afterwards, particularly with infantry and designated marksman configurations where additional stability was required. Unlike later commercial bipods, these examples were made from pressed steel with a simple spring-clip mounting head, making them robust but relatively uncommon on the collector market today.
