St. Francis of Assisi, born in 1181 or 1182 in Italy, was a wealthy merchant's son who renounced his riches to live a life of poverty and devotion to God. He founded the Franciscan Order, emphasizing humility, charity, and love for all creatures. Known for his deep connection with nature and his efforts to live in harmony with the environment, he also received the stigmata, marks resembling the wounds of Christ. Francis was canonized as a saint in 1228, just two years after his death in 1226, and is remembered as a symbol of peace and compassion.
