*Spanish, Late 19th Century, Bull-Head Sword Stick Walking Cane, Toledo Decorated Blade*
An antique sword stick fitted with a cast metal bull or ox-head handle, concealing a slender thrusting blade decorated with traditional Toledo ornament and the word “TOLEDO.”
The handle is cast in brass or bronze and modelled as a stylised bull’s head with curved horns and textured detailing, giving the piece strong character typical of late Victorian novelty walking sticks.
The stick forms a metal scabbard finished in black japanned coating, a protective enamel-like finish commonly used on 19th-century sword sticks. The blade withdraws from the shaft to reveal a narrow triangular-section spike intended for thrusting.
The blade retains traces of its original decorative finish, including gilt scrollwork panels and a red cartouche bearing the word “TOLEDO.” Such blades were widely produced in the Spanish sword-making centre of Toledo during the late 19th century and were frequently mounted in walking sticks and other export pieces.
Animal-head handles were a popular decorative feature on Victorian walking sticks, with examples depicting dogs, horses, rams and bulls. These cast metal handles provided a distinctive and substantial pommel while adding visual appeal to the piece.
Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 63.8 cm. Overall length: 73 cm. Overall length in scabbard / walking stick: 86.2 cm.
History Note:
Toledo has been one of Europe’s most famous sword-making centres since the medieval period. During the 18th and 19th centuries blades from Toledo were widely exported and became associated with quality steel and distinctive decorative etching.
By the late Victorian period sword sticks had become fashionable accessories, combining the outward appearance of a gentleman’s walking cane with a concealed blade.
