*Soviet, Cold War - Dated July 1968, BSS-MO-4U (БСС-МО-4У) Gas Mask Filter with Hose*
Original Soviet Cold War-era BSS-MO-4U gas mask filter canister, complete with its corrugated rubber breathing hose. The ribbed metal body retains its original olive finish with clearly stencilled Cyrillic markings to the front.
The canister is marked “БСС-МО-4У” (BSS-MO-4U), identifying the filter type, with a second line “К VII-68-10”, indicating production in July 1968, together with a factory code. A further number “1228” is present, representing a batch or lot number.
The base retains its original rubber sealing cap and is stamped with “СХТ” alongside a circular mould or inspection mark. The attached hose remains fitted, showing typical age-related wear consistent with long-term storage.
Approx. Measurements – Height: 18.2 cm. Width: 13.4 cm. Depth: 6.8 cm.
History Note:
Filters of this pattern were widely issued with Soviet civilian and military gas mask systems during the Cold War, including masks such as the GP-4 and GP-5. The hose configuration allowed the filter to be carried separately in a satchel, reducing weight on the facepiece and improving comfort during extended use.
Markings in this format are typical of Soviet production, with the month and year of manufacture encoded in Roman numerals and numerals respectively. Examples dated to the late 1960s represent standard mid-Cold War production during a period of extensive civil defence preparation across the USSR.
*Condition*
In used, service-worn condition. Significant paint loss, surface corrosion, and areas of encrusted residue are present across the body.
