This is a ‘Type 8’ S&W No2 from its serial number (between SN 62479 and 71467) and other features (3 hinge pin, barrel address position, knurled trigger and later knurled (type 2) hammer, short recoil shield, 1/8” lip grip top, and domed recessed grip screw). An assembly mark (10) is present in three locations on the
rear of the cylinder, frame of the gun and rear of the barrel, but not the grips (although these look original).

A smooth mottled grey with crisp action, this is a real collector's piece.

The manufacturer's mark and address is sclearly stamped on the top of the barrel.

The serial number 68588 (indicating 1869 as the manufacturing year) is stamped on the frame of the grip.

Unusually the barrel has been stamped with ELG Liege Proof mark (which from the style is likely to have been done prior to 1893) these include a Liege proof inspectors initial (crown over an indistinct T).

This restamping of the cylinder with Belgium proofs may suggest use in Europe between 1869 and 1893 or a replacement cylinder (although the assembly number on the cylinder matches the gun).

The pistol is not a Belgium copy, but an original Smith and Wesson. Although the gun must have spent some time in Europe during its life, it was imported to the UK from the US about 12 years ago. A historical conundrum waiting to be solved!

~ Condition ~

The metalwork is nice and clean as it is the bore, with good rifling.

The hinge is tight and the action works as intended.

~ Dimensions ~

The length of the barrel is 6 inches and the overall length of the piece is 10 3/4 inches (27.3 cm).
