The AKM, adopted by the Soviet armed forces in 1959, is the most common development of the AK-47 assault rifle. Unlike the AK-47's cast body, the AKM features a stamped body, with simplified internal components for easier manufacturing. Variants of the AKM were produced in several Warsaw Pact countries. This particular example was made in Romania and includes the typical Romanian fore-grip.
With Soviet assistance, Romania launched a program to manufacture a domestic AK rifle based on the AKM, designated Pistol Mitralieră. The first production model, designated Pistol Mitralieră model 1963 (PM md. 63), appeared in 1963, replacing the AK-47 in Romanian service.
This AKM bears the Romanian symbol for the Cugir factory. Each PM md. PM md. 63 receiver is marked with the year of production and a serial number with a Latin letter prefix - "1976 GS 4042". It has the correct Romanian fire selector settings: S - Sigur (Safety), FA - Foc Automat (automatic fire), FF - Foc cu Foc (semi-automatic fire). Early PM md. 63s had a simple muzzle nut like the original AK-47, but later models, like this one, feature the slanted muzzle brake.
