*Romanian, AKM Type I Bayonet (AK47 Kalashnikov Variant) – Matching Numbers “AEG 0718”*

This is a likely Romanian-manufactured AKM Type I bayonet, produced for the Pistol Mitralieră model 1963 (PA md. 63), a 7.62mm assault rifle based on the Soviet AKM. The bayonet is marked on both the crossguard and scabbard with the electropenciled code “AEG 0718”, indicating a matched pair—a very uncommon and desirable feature.

The AKM rifle, introduced in 1960 as a modernized successor to the AK-47, included a redesigned bayonet lug to accommodate a new, multipurpose bayonet. The result was the AKM Type I bayonet, a ground-breaking design that revolutionized the role of the bayonet on the modern battlefield. Far from a simple blade, it incorporated a clip-point sawback blade, insulated scabbard, and wire-cutter function when combined with the scabbard lug. The addition of a rubber insulator on the scabbard rendered the unit safe for use on electrified wire, while a hooked crossguard and integral retention strap made it practical for both field utility and combat.

This bayonet closely resembles the Soviet 6X3 pattern, and was widely produced under license or copied by Warsaw Pact nations including East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Russia. Romanian variants, like this one, are identifiable by their reddish-brown Bakelite grips with a rounded pommel, black blued steel scabbards, and the use of tan rubber insulators. The electropenciled “AEG” prefix is believed to be a military or depot rack number, rather than a manufacturer mark.

*Condition*
This example is in good original condition, with clear service wear consistent with storage and use. The blade retains its edge and shows signs of light oxidation and field use, along with minor staining. The reddish-brown Bakelite grip is structurally solid but has minor chipping and cracks near the pommel, common in Romanian bayonets of this era. The scabbard is complete, with intact rubber insulator and working wire cutter lug. The finish on the scabbard shows minor abrasion. Both the bayonet and scabbard retain their matching electropenciled serial: AEG 0718. Please refer to photographs as part of the condition report.
