British No.36M MK 1 grenade, body marked J.H. over W. for British firm of John Harper, Whitehall.

The term "Mills bomb" refers to a series of British hand grenades created by William Mills. These grenades, the first modern fragmentation ones adopted by the British Army, were extensively utilized in both World Wars. The No. 36, was a variant equipped with a detachable base plate for rifle discharger cup use. The ultimate version, the No. 36M, was specially crafted and waterproofed with shellac for deployment in the hot Mesopotamian climate, persisting in production for an extended period. The No. 36M Mk I served as the British Army's standard hand grenade from the 1930s until 1972.
